Sneakers made out of coffee ground?

Writer: VerenaVerena

What do you do with your coffee grounds and oyster shells? Probably you just throw them away?

Two companies know something better to do with these food leftovers. They use it to manufacture sneakers.

Already in 2019 the Finnish sneaker brand Rens launched the world’s first sneaker made from coffee grounds and recycled plastic. This year they even won the Red Dot Award for their outstanding product design. Sustainability is not only reflected in the way Rens use material also in terms of transport. The sneakers are shipped to regional department stores in order to reduce the carbon footprint of last-mile shipping compared to a central warehouse.

The other one is the German brand Genesis who prides itself on being the most sustainable among sneakers. They use upcycled material and textile innovations including oyster shells, banana and pineapple leaves for their sneakers. Also fair working conditions, donations to environmental organisations are important to them.

Consumers loves these two brands as they do not need to make a compromise on design while buying sustainable.
